Project Title: Harris Chain of Lakes Cyanobacteria Monitoring Date Submitted 1/9/2006 10:49:42 AM

Sponsors: Baker

Statewide Interest:
The presence of freshwteer toxic algae in Florida lakes has significantly raised public conceerns about using lakes for recreation. A reduction in recreational usage will have a major economic impact on Florida tourism and therefore local communities. The Harris Chain of Lakes has been identified as a group of lakes with potentially high levels of toxins. DOH is attempting to initiate studies to evaluate potential human health threats. Funding is requested to continue the health studies at the Harris Chain and initiate a statewide survey of lakes with DOH and Florida LAKEWATCH to provice information on the scale of the problem for Florida and attempt to identify the environmental factors responsible for causing the production of toxins.
