| Statewide Interest: |
| The presence of freshwteer toxic algae in Florida lakes has significantly raised public conceerns about using lakes for recreation. A reduction in recreational usage will have a major economic impact on Florida tourism and therefore local communities.
The Harris Chain of Lakes has been identified as a group of lakes with potentially high levels of toxins. DOH is attempting to initiate studies to evaluate potential human health threats. Funding is requested to continue the health studies at the Harris Chain and initiate a statewide survey of lakes with DOH and Florida LAKEWATCH to provice information on the scale of the problem for Florida and attempt to identify the environmental factors responsible for causing the production of toxins. |

| Project Description: |
| Monitoring for potentially toxic cyanobacteria that have been in a persistent bloom condition in the Harris Chain of Lakes which at times produce toxin levels that exceed World Health Organization guidelines. |
| |
| Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
| |
| Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
| Provide the abiliy to alert the public when a bloom condition exists that may produce harmful toxins. Very high toxin levels have been measured in several lakes in the Harris Chain. Although episodic and typically short-lived the toxin levels have been measured as high as 7,000 times the World Health Organization guideline of 1.0 ppb for drinking water. |
