Statewide Interest: |
Over the past decade, many studies have documented high rates of trauma exposure among juvenile offenders, with many youth experiencing numerous traumatic events. These events include: childhood physical and/or sexual abuse; serious life threats and/or injuries; witnessing severe injury (especially domestic violence) and/or death of another; and being involved in gang violence. The typical juvenile offender in the brief span of their lives has usually been exposed to numerous traumatic events. This program serves to reduce the number of re-occurring criminal acts committed by Lee County youth who have been victims of trauma and to reduce the number of these youth sent to residential commitment programs due to violations of probation. |

Project Description: |
A primary focus of this project will be to reduce juvenile offender risk factors for future delinquent behavior and enhance protective factors that will help youthful offenders make successful community adjustments. Although trauma effects can manifest in a variety of ways, when combined with other risk factors, trauma may be integral in the development and persistence of antisocial behavior. Trauma can engender anger and violent acting out, and other intense emotions, often leading to substance abuse or other high risk activities. The program will utilize evidence-based treatment programs by National Child Traumatic Stress Network and International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies to work with 240 severely traumatized juvenile offenders and their families. |
