Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #180
South Miami-Dade Watershed Sub-Basin C103N-S-5A Retrofitting

Requester: Antonio Cotarelo, P.E. Organization: Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resources Management

Project Title: South Miami-Dade Watershed Sub-Basin C103N-S-5A Retrofitting Date Submitted 1/5/2006 1:41:26 PM

Sponsors: Bullard

Statewide Interest:
The project will help reduce pollutant loads discharged into the C-103 Canal, which ultimately discharges to Biscayne Bay, a protected body of water under State of Florida guidelines. Therefore, this project will contribute to help Biscayne Bay attain state ambient water quality standards while positively contributing to the aesthetics and increased standard of living in the benefited community.

Project Description:
This request is based on the implementation of a control measure recommended by the Stormwater Master Plan in the C-103 hydrologic basin. The C-103 basin is a component of the South Miami Dade Watershed. the goal of this control measure is to retrofit sice (6) existing outfalls into the C-103 canal. Currently, these outfalls discharge stormwater runoff without pre-treatment. This control measure proposes to retrofit the area with approximately 7,500 feet of exfiltration drains to treat the stormwater before discharing into the waterbody. This request also proposes to build six (6) new pollution control structures prior to discharging into the canal.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The project goal, once implemented, is to attenuate the heaviest loads of pollutants generated by the initial wash off of the watershed to surface waters (C-103 canal), which is caused by the effect of the first inch of runoff over its area. The runoff generated over the basin will be routed through a treatment train consisting of exfiltration trenches and pollution control structures installed as part of this project to reduce the amount of urban runoff going into the C-103 canal.
