Project Description:
The adverse impact of a downturn in the productivity of the agricultural sector in response to changes in the national and international markets, as well as the direct impact of several hurricanes led Gov. Jeb Bush to declare the region south of Lake Okeechobee as an area of critical economic concern. In response, the City of Belle Glade in cooperation with public and private partners, has attempted to proactively implement projects which will diversify its economy and create an environment for economic growth. Among the several efforts currently being undertaken, is the designation of portions of the City as an "Community Re-development Area" (CRA). This planning initiatives identifies a series of actions that should be undertaken to promote the revitalization of the City. Critical among these is the construction of a navigation lock which will permit the passage of recreational vessels in and out of Lake Okeechobee.
