Caloosahatchee River Watershed Initiative

Requester: Carol Ann Wehle, Executive Dir Organization: South Florida Water Mgmt District

Project Title: Caloosahatchee River Watershed Initiative Date Submitted 1/12/2006 5:09:00 PM

Sponsors: Aronberg

Statewide Interest:
The Caloosahatchee River is designated as a priority waterbody of regional or statewide significance pursuant to the Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Act, F.S. 373.453. This Watershed Initiative is a series of regional water projects that will have a significant impact on water quality, hydrology, habitat restoration and public access and appreciation in the Caloosahatchee River and the associated environmental enhancement of the Lower Charlotte Harbor estuaries. Additionally, some of the affected waterbody planning areas are designated "impaired" by the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection per the 1999 Florida Watershed Restoration Act and the Impaired Waterbody Rule (Rule 62-303, F.A.C.). Implementation of this Watershed Initiative will provide reductions in pollutant loads to impaired waterbodies.

Project Description:
The Caloosahatchee River Basin, a priority wetbody, extends 105 kilometers from Lake Okeechobee to San Carlos Bay. The freshwater systems of the Caloosahatchee River are divided into 2 distinct hydrological units, freshwater and estuarine basins. These basins include parts of Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, Glades and Collier Counties. The Caloosahatchee River Watershed Initiative is a combination of projects that have multiple benefits within the general goal of restoration and water quality improvements in the Caloosahatchee Basin and receiving coastal waters. The project components include retrofitting existing stormwater systems to provide water quality and flood mitigation improvements, restoring riverine flow ways, restoring flow to natural systems that supply water to our aquifers, creating stormwater retention, detention and filter marshes to removeimpurities going to the river and to improve the hydrology associated with freshwater flows to the river, implementing on farm and sub-regional structural enhancements to reduce nutrient pollutant loads, restoring the natural systems of our estuaries to improve shellfish and fish habitats and associated resource monitoring and assessment. The focus of these projects is to provide hydrologic and water quality improvement to the Caloosahatchee River and its estuaries. These projects are implemented through cooperative partnerships with federal, state, county, and city governments, universities, and nonprofit organizations.
