Statewide Interest:
Illiteracy is a major problem in the Haitian Community. Haitian people have to overcome illiteracy and the language barrier in order to survive. Many businesses, forms, programs, and the like offer a Spanish option. Given that the population of people who speak Creole is far less than those who speak Spanish, it is often seen as too costly to also provide information in Creole. Illiteracy in the Haitian Community is among the top reasons why Haitian parents are not involved at their children's schools, why they have such a hard time filling out forms and applying for state funded programs, and why they participate in low numbers in programs targeted specifically toward them. Educating this group will give access to services and information to the Haitian community. This program also reduces wasted State resources, as the Creole-speakers will be able to read and communicate in English and are empowered by this knowledge they will being to participate in greater number in State funded programs.

Project Description:
The Creole Literacy Program (CLP) is designed to develop formal grammar, letter recognition, sentence formation, phonies and basic reading and writing skills in English among Haitian adults. These participants take courses five days a week for four hours a day and receive a certificate of completion after the 12-week course. The curriculum is set so that each day focuses on a different aspect of the English language. The participants are tested and challenged periodically through the length of the course to ensure comprehension of the material.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Graduates of the CLP are provided assistance in finding English programs that will help expand upon the basic skills they acquired. With this basic knowledge, some were able to find better jobs and while others enrolled in academic programs.
