Project Title: Technology Leaders Intiative(TLI) Date Submitted 12/29/2005 4:49:38 PM

Sponsors: Bullard

Statewide Interest:
According to the Millennium Survey conducted by Deloitte & Touche, LLP, 66.3% of Florida executives list "recruiting a qualified workforce" as the primary crisis facing their companies. The entrepreneurial sector is also in need of top talent because the majority of new jobs are being created by small and medium- sized entrepreneurial ventures. Underprivileged youth are disproportionately affected by the lack of technology and business knowledge These students desperately need a combination of mentoring and hands- on teaching in order to discover and develop their creativity. If these students are not exposed to constructive developmental opportunities, they will be increasingly unable to compete in tommorrow's economy and may channel their creative energies into destructive pursuits. TLI addresses this need by strengthning Florida's pool if career-focused, technologically skilled students. TLI strengthens academic skills, which will impact classroom grades, FCAT performance and graduation rates. Schools that have implemented TLI during a four-year period have posted increased FCAT scores. Moreover, the teamwork and conflict resoultion skills gained by particpants will increase their ability to interact with others in a respect and constructive manner. Children residing in Miami Dade County Public Schools as "at risk" due to unusually high drop out, unemployment abd incarceration rates of area youth. TLI will expose these children to positive role models and allow them to envision new opportunities for short and long term success.

Project Description:
The Technology Leaders Intative(TLI) allows students to develop a myriad of academic, career and life skills by creating inventions. TLI's also provides students with the opportunity to channel creative energies into positive pursuits, develop teamwork skills and positive self esteem, understand the link between technology and commerce, and discover the ability ti participate in a technology driven- economy. Instructors from the Yeager Foundation will conduct TLI series of motiviational invention demonstrations, exciting hands- on invention/ Business development workshops. Thirty students at each partcipating school typically receive ten weeks of TLI during a school year. Teams of 3 to 5 students form "companies" that brainstorm to create inventions that solve real-world problems. They conduct patent searches via the Internet and create prototypes, business plans and commercials to showcase their inventions at an on campus Intention Expo to and audience of students, parents and educators. In addition to providing a hands-on career exploration oppurtunity TLI activities devlop critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, language arts, math, science, applied technology and research skills. This uniquely motivating experience instills students with the attitude "If your mind can conceive it and your heart can believe it, then you can achieve it". The skills and mindset that are developed through this program transfer directly into the classroom, workplace and everyday life. TLI has been successfully provided to students from 25 schools since 1998. We are requesting funds to implement this program in 30 Miami Dade County Public Schools (grades 3-12).
