Statewide Interest: |
Science Centers can play a vital role in increasing the pipeline of future scientists, mathematicians and technologists. Results of the latest phase of research of the Governors program in Florida shows that mentored students have marked learning gains and are enrolling in post secondary education at higher rates than non-mentored students. The Miami Museum of Science has combined both needs and received the 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math, Science, and Engineering Mentoring.
Serving students from primarily financially challenged homes this request will initiate or strengthen mentoring programs in science museums located in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Palm Beach, Tallahassee, and Miami-Dade County. Museums in the state-wide mentoring collaborative will share a variety of programming strategies specific to each museum and will learn how Miami has structured their program to provide a variety of mentoring experiences. Services to be provided by Miami include the conduct of a training institute for museum education staff hired through this initiative, training materials, on-going technical assistance and support. The Miami Museum of Science will develop and maintain a web site designed to promote communication and interaction between Florida's museums participating in the Florida Museum Mentoring Initiative.
