Statewide Interest: |
Sarasota Bay is a District SWIM Priority Water Body. Concern for the overall health of the bay resulted in its designation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an "estuary of national significance in 1987, and as an Outstanding Florida Water. The bay is made up of approximately 52 square miles of open water and extends from Anna Maria Sound and Palma Sola Bay in the north, to Venice Inlet in the south. In order to protect the bay from further degradation, preservation and restoration activities must be undertaken, including inter-tidal wetlands restoration, stormwater retrofits, and restoration of shoreline habitats. The Sarasota Bay Estuary has experienced a decline in water quality and sea grass coverage and a significant decrease in inter-tidal wetlands habitat.Shoreline habitats have been replaced by sea walls and construction of homes and commercial businesses. The loss of the bay's natural shoreline and sea grass acreage has resulted in a decline in the aesthetic, recreational, and commercial value of the bay, as well as a loss of habitat for native fish and wildlife. |
