Statewide Interest:
The Big Cypress Basin Watershed Initiative is a series of regional water projects that will have a significant impact on water quality in Naples Bay, Rookery Bay, and Marco while providing environmental enhancement in the estuaries. This initiative will improve water quality in all of these waterbodies, which are listed priorities for the South Florida Water Management District.

Project Description:
The Big Cypress Basin, a priority watershed, covering 2,400 square miles in Collier and parts of Lee and Hendry Counties. The major waterways include the Cocohatchee River, Gordon River, Henderson Creek, Barron River, and a large network of canals operated and maintained by the Big Cypress Basin unit of SFWMD. Other major flowways include Okaloacoochee Slough and numerous large cypress strands, including Fakahatchee, Corkscrew, Bird Rookery, Kissimmee Billie, and Picayune.
