Project Description:
Constructed over a period of 17 years between 1941 and 1958 on the Florida Southern College campus, the system of esplanades (covered walkways) which connect the 12 Wright buildings are supported by massive columns, with cantilevered roofs providing protection from the elements for pedestrian pathways that extend from building to building. Through the years, the effects of humidity and water intrusion have had a very noticeable impact on the mile and a half of these esplanades. With failing support resulting from decaying rebar, differential movement, and significant settlement over the years, many areas of this historic network of covered walkways have deteriorated to become potential hazards for visitors and students alike. Obvious sagging of the roof slabs and significant cracking have compromised numerous support columns, and cracked and spalled joints have weakened the roof slabs of different elevations. Large sections of overhead plaster occasionally fall as a result of the decaying infrastructure. Although stabilization of the most serious areas of deterioration has been addressed as funds have become available, it is imperative for Florida Southern College to act now to maintain the structural and historic integrity of these famous structures. No longer can the College incrementally repair and stabilize these deteriorating walkways as small grants become available. Therefore, Florida Southern College respectfully requests funding of $1.6 million to stabilize and secure the Wright-designed covered walkways that are a critical architectural component of this historic campus. Specifically, the College seeks funding to stabilize the failing cantilever systems and provide new expansion joints to prevent the collapse of the walkway covers; repair and reseal all roof top expansion joints; install roof sealants to prevent water intrusion and moisture penetration that have resulted in steel degradation and spalled plaster and joints; repair all areas of exposed steel supports; restore all recessed lighting fixtures; replace steps with ramps at selected locations for full campus accessibility; and reseal all esplanades to protect against further damages from the climate.
