Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #3201
Museum of Science and Industry: IMAX Film "The Everglades"

Requester: Mr. Wit Ostrenko, President Organization: Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)

Project Title: Museum of Science and Industry: IMAX Film "The Everglades" Date Submitted 1/13/2006 3:20:36 PM

Sponsors: Sebesta

Statewide Interest:
The Everglades ecosystem is critical to the future of Florida's overall ecological health. Ongoing multi-billion dollar restoration efforts are not well understood by the general public, and there is a pressing need to educate Floridians and people all over the nation about this unique ecosystem and the need to restore it to its original vitality. Funding for these restoration efforts is derived from the federal and state budget. Therefore, it is incumbent on the state to educate the public as to the critical importance the everglades plays in the state's ecosystem and provide information to the public to justify the fiscal resources that are being dedicated to the restoration efforts.

Project Description:
The Museum of Science & Industry is a regionally significant cultural and educational asset whose staff and consultants are uniquely qualified for this proposal. This request is for funds for the production of an IMAX film that tells the story of the Everglades. The film will provide a comprehensive explanation of this unique ecosystem and educate the public about the multi-billion dollar restoration efforts that are occuring. The making of the film would be a collaberative process between the State of Florida, the Museum of Science and Industry, and MacGillivray Freeman Films. It would feature the rare and beautiful subtropical Everglades wildernes and it's unique collection of plant and animal life. The film would focus on the importance of this special ecosystem and the magnitude and significance of the restoration project plan. In addition to the film, MOSI's educational staff would develop a curriculum guide that may accompany the film for use by educational institutions (in both hard-copy and internet formats). It would align with the national science standards and cross-referenced for Florida's FCAT. The guide would be suitable for all school settings.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The film will provide the state and national public critical information about the beauty and importance of Florida's Everglades and about the restoration efforts in the IMAX film format. As the world's largest format film, an IMAX film production is best-suited for taking people to places that are difficult to see and understand. This film will allow people to see parts of the Everglades that are virtually inaccessible for the normal visitor. After having this film "experience," people will have a better understanding of the Everglades' importance as our major source for drinking water; a habitat for unique animals and plant-life, as well as to several threatened and endangered species; and the main aquatic influence on Florida Bay and the Florida Keys Coral Reef System.
