The Afro in Books & Things Refurbishment amd Expansion " project is the literary gathering place of the "Osun's Village in the African Caribbean Cultural Arts, Entertainment and International Trade Corridor" and supports Gov. Bush's number one priority, which is to ensure that all South Florida students are able to read at or above grade level by 2012. By preserving the existance and facilitating the future expansion of South Florida's oldest multicultural bookstore, serving the African American and Caribbean community, we make culturally relevant literature available to parents who can inspire their children to read by example !

Project Description:
Refurbishment of the existing Afro in Books & Things property and construction of additional retail space. Afro in Books & Things is South Florida's Oldest Community Builders HDC in collaboration with KDI/ Architecture, Inc. will utlize the respective funds to expand the existing bookstore and cultural facility, doubling it's existing square footage to create central community gathering space with weekly culturally specific programming that will encourage reading through intergenerational storytelling, great author booksignings and lectures, workshops and expand the existing building facade with a unifying cultural theme that meets the African, Caribbean design standard within the community within 7th avenue commercial corridor.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
All measurable outcomes will include: Creation, construction and programming of a central community literary gathering space to be called " Afro in Books & Things." Preserve the legacy of South Florida Oldest bookstore serving the African American and Caribbean Community. Create a fun stimulating, international literary enviornment for parents to bring their children and expose them to culturally specific literature, ultimately increasing awareness in theri youth of the importance of reading useable retail space resulting in their youth of the importance of reading. The improvements and expanison of the existing building will double the useable retail space resulting in increased retail sales tax returns
