Neighborly Pharmacy for Seniors

Requester: Debra Shade Organization: Neighborly Care Network

Project Title: Neighborly Pharmacy for Seniors Date Submitted 1/4/2006 10:54:39 AM

Sponsors: Jones

Statewide Interest:
There are over 269,598 people aged 60 + in Pinellas County. The 85+ population accounts for 3.4% of the total population and 12.3% of the 60+ population. The 85% + population has experienced a 5.2% increase since 2003 and is the fastest growing segment of the senior population. It has been documented in national studies that it is the desire of almost 100% of all elders to live in their own homes and age in plave. It is also known that the majority of Medicare recipients have no drug coverage. The Neighborly Pharmacy offers prescription drugs to elders having no insurance coverage. The rx are delivered to the elderly for free. This service benefits the state by limiting emergency room and hospital care costs for the elderly that in the past have not taken their perscribed medication. Furthermore, this services provides in home support which reduces the state use/cost of Nursing homes and assisted living facilities where these clients would have been placed.

Project Description:
Neighborly Care Network (premier senior services agency for over 40 years) realized first hand that the seniors in this area could not afford rx drugs due to the fact that they fell between Medicaid eligibility and Medicare with no supplemental drug coverage. These seniors are choosing between buying food or medication and are using drug stretching techniques of taking medicine every other day or only one pill a day versus the perscribed dosage in order to make the medicine last longer. These tactics increase their chances of harmful health problems that will only cost the state more money. Neighborly sells the prescriptions at cost and deliver them to their omes. The requested funds will cover all the filling fees, personnel , supplies and delivery. Our pricing is significantly less expensive than conventional drug stores. The Neighborly Pharmacy also provides drug management consultation and medication reviews to determine in one drug's effectiveness might be impeded by partnering with another.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Clients will receive drugs at costs lower than conventional drug store prices. Neighborly charges will be compared to current vendors periodically. Client remains at home and independent. Neighborly's Pharmacy will be replicated in other areas of the state. Competition may reduce its prices on drugs to uninsured individuals. Reduction in purchasing of drugs from Canada where no pharmacist is available to discuss/review medications.
