Project Description: |
In 2000 the Florida Legislature passed a law requiring DCF to identify older persons with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders as specific target populations for state funding. In a 2003 Special Session, state budget (SB2A) passed with the requirement that DOEA and DCF implement a coordinated policy to identify and refer elderly persons with mental health and/or substance abuse problems for treatment. The Florida BRITE Model will conduct brief screening for alcohol abuse, prescription and over-the-counter medication misuse, illicit drugs, suicide risk, and depression. The BRITE Program will focus on helping underserved elders: minorities, low income, and isolated, withdrawn individuals.
"Non-traditional" substance abuse referral sources will help identify "hidden abusers." Elders will be screened where they are most likely to be found: in their own homes or in elder-specific living centers. Brief interventions will be conducted in home or on-site. Brief treatment will be provided if needed. |
