Project Description:
This funding will be used for the development of vaccines, antimicrobial reagents and detection systems necessary to interrupt and control infections, fungi, biological and other agents and diseases. This funding will implement a University-wide initiative to build a world class, all encompassing program for the advanced study of Emerging Pathogens - new, exotic or imported infectious agents not previously known and with no available vaccines, which can cause significant disease and lead to serious health concerns and economic impact in Florida. Humans, animals and plants are all subject to diseases caused by emerging pathogens, such as SARS, West Nile Virus, Avian virus, HIV, citrus greening, and bio-terrorism agents such as anthrax and other agents. Florida has a dense human, animal and plant population and is particularly susceptible to the newly emerging pathogens, many of which can be spread through frequent hurricanes, and biological and chemical acts of terrorism. To be successful, programs in the Health Science Center, IFAS, Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and CLAS must collaborate to provide an integrated, all encompassing program to study emerging pathogens.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Specific emphasis will be given to areas involved in human response to infections, study of newly emergent pathogens such as Avian virus, SARS, West Nile virus, Citrus canker and greening. There is an urgent need to train scientists, integrate knowledge and expand research into emerging pathogens to gain further insight into the dynamics between human, animal and plant populations and pathogens, and develop appropriate vaccines, antimicrobial reagents and detection systems necessary to interrupt and control such infections. The primary goal will be to protect the human, animal and plant populations of Florida from unanticipated, devastating infections and diseases and their subsequent economic impact.
