Highlands County is designated as a host county during emergency events requiring evacuation and provides shelter space for evacuees from south FL as well as both coasts. The shelters were activated by the Highlands County EOC four times in the last 15 months. |

| Project Description: |
| This project would install 2 100kW, natural gas powered emergency standby generators at the two wind compliant emergency shelters located in the City of Avon Park. The amount requested would cover the purchase of the genterator as well as installation and natural gas connections and automatic switches. During 4 hurricanes both shelters were used. Neither had emergency power. This caused severe problems when commercial power was lost. Among these problems were loss of interior lighting, telephone, and the inability to store perishable foodstuffs. The retrofit of these shelters with standby emergency power would alleviate these problems. |
