Foster Care Homeless Alternative Project

Requester: Randy Croy Organization: Serenity House of Volusia Inc

Project Title: Foster Care Homeless Alternative Project Date Submitted 1/4/2008 9:17:12 AM

Sponsors: Lynn

Statewide Interest:
This project will provide access to intensive residential treatment and case management for children with mental illness and substance abuse disorders who are aging out of the foster care system. Many of these children, upon reaching age 18, lose their support network which too often results in unemployment, homelessness, and criminal involvement. This project can serve as a statewide pilot research site regarding cost effectiveness in interrupting the revolving door of foster children becoming involved in high-cost publicly funded interventions. The project provides research data that advises policy-makers as to the cost-effectiveness of intervening with this population.

Project Description:
Serenity House of Volusia proposes to add access to 1,095 intensive residential treatment bed days, 32 clinical assessments and case management for individuals aging out of foster care with co-occurring disorders. Priority for access to this program will be provided to young persons aging out of foster care who would become homeless and likely become involved in the criminal justice system without this intervention. 32 high risk individuals will be served annually. Referrals will be accepted from the Volusia County Schools, Community Based Care and the Department of Children and Families Protective Services offices throughout north central Florida. A specialized aftercare component will insure that access to community support services are provided to each client after completion of treatment.
