Project Description: |
The Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network is a statewide organizational alliance created to promote, develop and assist African American museums and cultural organizations in the acquistion, documentation, preservation, and distribution of materials specific to recognizing, understanding and appreciating the contributions of African Americans to Florida's history. The intent is to build the capacity of these organizatios through intense training. State funding from the 2006-2007 Legislature was leveraged with federal funds to support the network initiative. Funding for 2008-2009 is requested to continue this training, expand to reach more Directors, and to begin concentrated work with Directors on how to properly catlog and digitize collections that are currently being held in unsafe environments. The 2006-2997 appropriation of funds was used to identify the wide range of capability and needs of the musuems and cultural organizations in the state. Of the initial 41 local organizations identified, 37 responded identifying needs ranging from technology acquistion and upgrades, to website development, and training in historical collections acquistion and management techniques. Ten museums diredtors were identified and selected to receive targeted network assistance over a 2 year period. The state funding was leveraged to receive a $150,000 federal grant for the 2 conferences, and interim on-going technical development assistance. Technology equipment (compuers, fax, copiers, printers or scanners) was provided to selected museums based on need. A website for the network has been designed and is now online (www.faahpn.com). Websites were also developed for the first 5 museum directors, with a plan to develop for additional museums as additional resources are availabe. The Network augments the work of the Commissioner of Education's Task Force on African American History and serves the public as the reservoir of information and as a referral and informational resource for the Florida Department of State and other public entities needing information as it relates to African American contributions and accomplishments in Florida. The network identifies historic landmarks and legacies throughout Florida and provides scholarly research and technical resources to produce historical materials for use in Florida's classrooms and in community settings. Development of a central data base that captures the historical collection holdings of the participating museums is a goal of the network. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
At least 25 museums/cultural organizations will improve their ability to meet their historical, cultural and community resource missions as a result of one-on-one training in exhibiting, archival work, and technology . Many historical collections that are now endangered in small museums across the state will be saved through assistance provided by the Network in getting them catalogued and digitized. Training will be conducted on how to convert these documents and historical resources into educational products available to the public. Additional museum/cultural organization directors will be trained and be on-line as part of the Network. Funding for this project will result in expanded economic development for the state and local communities through historic preservation and heritage tourism. |
