| Project Description: |
| Families of persons with mental illness, dementias and developmental disabilities often struggle to find help for their loved ones, including obtaining necessary medical treatment and accessing public services. Sometimes these families can be helped by guardianship or guardianship alternatives. The present legal system, however, has significant barriers and obstacles for middle to low-income families in obtaining this assistance. Legal fees, confusing court reporting requirements, lack of information and support often stand in the way for these families to obtain the help they need. With the resources of this grant, OPG will develop a self-sustaining, program delivery system that will provide families with additional resources. These resources and services include outreach, website informational resources (available statewide); family support groups; mediation services; individualized assessments of the appropriateness of guardianship and guardianship alternatives; and assistance with the legal process. |
