Project Description:
This funding request is needed for study-recommended drainage improvement projects. As the City of North Port is located at the end of the Big Slough Watershed Myakkahatchee Creek "pipeline", the current flooding and water quality conditions are attributed not only to the City's growth, but also to upstream development and land uses in the Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto County basins within the Big Slough Watershed. The proposed improvements projects will have significant regional impact; lowering of flood stages and enhancing water quality within the Myakkahatchee Creek (specifically the canal system in the City of North Port; tributaries in Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto Counties; and the downstream Charlotte County canal system). Since the Myakkahatchee Creek (and associated City canal system) is the primary source of the City's drinking water supply, any retention projects implemented will serve a dual purpose of attenuation of flood waters and an additional benefit of improving the City's drinking supply water quality. The subsequent reduction in pollutant loading to Myakkahatchee Creek (which flows to the Myakka river; an Outstanding Florida Water) can be considered another regional benefit. Following are expected improvement projects and best management practices (BMPs) that are proposed for funding: 1. Replacement/rehabilitation of water control structures, addition of telemetry controls at selective locations. 2. Selective dredging of manmade canals and silted areas in the Myakkahatchee Creek to improve conveyance. Dredging of the silted areas within the Myakkahatchee Creek will serve to restore the natural system. 3. Acquisition of adjacent or upstream properties for retention of flood waters and water quality enhancements. 4. Development of regional stormwater treatment systems upstream of Myakkahatchee Creek and City canals. 5. Improvements in the local storm sewer systems to relieve chronic nuisance from local flooding problems. 6. Modification of local regulations to explore and implement Low Impact Development concepts.
