SOS+ Project (Signs of Suicide)

Requester: Dick Jacobs, M.S., C.A.P., L.M.F.T., President & C.E.O. Organization: The Center For Drug - Free Living, Inc.

Project Title: SOS+ Project (Signs of Suicide) Date Submitted 1/4/2008 12:03:59 PM

Sponsors: Posey

Statewide Interest:
This project supports the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy to reduce the incidence of suicide in our state by one third by the end of 2010 as well as the specific goals and objectives outlined in the Strategy. Suicide is Americas 11th leading cause of death, claiming the lives of over 30,000 Americans per year. In Florida, 2,308 residents took their lives in 2005, (a rate of 12.8 per 100,000), placing it 13th in the nation for rates of suicides. Compared to the 988 homicides that occurred in Florida in 2005, the suicide rate is over twice the homicide rate. For more than a decade, Floridas suicide rate has consistently exceeded the national suicide rate and suicide is the third leading cause of death among our States young people. The SOS+ Project specifically addresses two (2) of the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategys three (3) basic goals: 1) To decrease the incidence of suicide by one third from approx.14.1 per 100,000 in 2001 to approx. 9.4 per 100,000 by 2010. 2) To decrease the incidence of teen suicide by one third from approx. 9.5 per 100,000 in 2001 to approx. 6.3 per 100,000 2010. This project also supports action taken by the Florida Legislature in 1999, (House Resolution No. 9233 and Senate Resolution No. 2684) in which the Legislature recognized suicide as a state problem, declared suicide prevention to be a state priority and encouraged suicide prevention efforts. This type of program is supported at the National, State and local levels by various entities including, the Department of Health & Human Services - SAMHSA, the Florida Office of Drug Control, the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP), DCF, DOC, DJJ, DOE, DOH, AHCA, DOEA, USF, the Michael Buonauro Foundation, the Beth Foundation, the Suicide Prevention Action Network of Florida (SPAN-FL) and the public schools in Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties.

Project Description:
The SOS+ Project specifically focuses on one of the populations identified in the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy as being of highest risk, youth. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among our States young people. The project builds upon the initial successes of the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program which has been in Central Florida Schools since 2004. Funded by the Michael Buonauro Foundation, the evidence-based SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program provides a suicide prevention program for all secondary school students throughout Orange County during the 2005-2006 school year is now in use in Osceola and Seminole Counties as well. Participating schools receive a free kit of materials containing everything needed to implement the program school-wide as well as trainings for school personnel. The parent of each student receives a letter explaining the program and information to assist them in the identification of depression and suicidal tendencies and to help initiate family discussions. While the SOS program has proved successful in identifying youth with depression and suicidal tendencies it is unable to provide additional support for the individuals and their families. At the precise moment when many of these families are best prepared to address the depression and suicidality of their children, the additional services needed are all too often beyond their reach. The SOS+ Project addresses this gap by providing parents with referrals to professionals trained to provide appropriate, advanced suicide education and prevention services. The requested funds will be used to purchase these services for those families who could otherwise not afford to do so. The SOS+ Project is a collaborative effort between the youth and their families, the schools, the Michael Buonauro Foundation and The Center For Drug-Free Living, Inc.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The Center For Drug - Free Living, Inc. takes the need for outcomes and accountability very seriously. Our experience serving children, adolescents and their families has produced some remarkable outcomes for the families and communities they serve. The Center For Drug - Free Living, Inc. fully expects to continue these remarkable outcomes with the SOS+ Project by focusing on four (4) objectives identified in the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy. These include: 1) Raise awareness and disseminate information about the risk factors and warning signs associated with suicide; 2) Overcome the reluctance to talk about suicide as a major debilitating social phenomenon; 3) Debunk myths about suicide that lead to greater risk of suicide or hinder its prevention; and, 4): Implement education and prevention activities that are effective in prevention of suicide and suicide attempts. By focusing on these objectives, The Center For Drug-Free Living, Inc., the Michael Buonauro Foundation and the SOS+ Project expect to contribute to the achievement of two (2) of the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategys three (3) basic goals: Goal 1) To decrease the incidence of suicide by one third from approx.14.1 per 100,000 in 2001 to approx. 9.4 per 100,000 by 2010. Goal 2) To decrease the incidence of teen suicide by one third from approx. 9.5 per 100,000 in 2001 to approx. 6.3 per 100,000 2010.
