Statewide Interest: |
As the Yachting Capital of the United States, Fort Lauderdale and the New River offer boaters from all over the world numerous unparalleled opportunities and amenities. Seawall is approximately 60 to 80 years old in this area-well beyond average life expectancy for such a structure. Multiple areas adjacent to seawall are pocketed with holes and large crevasses, resulting in potential safety hazards. Vessels which are docked adjacent to undermined seawall areas run the risk of seawall failure and associated hull damage. The general public has open access to areas of concern. |

Project Description: |
The New River is a heavily traversed body of water that caters to vessels of lengths up to approximately 200 feet. Funding would provide for the replacement of approximately 1700 feet of seawall adjacent to New River on the north side of river between Andrews Avenue and S.E. 5th Avenue. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Erosion of the seawall face, due to numerous causes, has resulted in areas of collapse, loss of backfill, and damaged toe walls. Vessels docked adjacent to undermined seawall areas run the risk of hull damage. The elimination of holes and large crevasses will prevent future seawall failure and will insure a hazard free visit by boaters from all over the world and the safety of the users of the New River. |
