Statewide Interest: |
The Inner City School Dropout, Truancy & Suspension Prevention Initiative is a community based response to inner city youth truancy and suspension with has a direct correlation with juvenile crime as well as the disproportionate minority over-representation of children of color and in response to the graduated levels of juvenile offenders into the adult penal system. This coordinated effort is also in compliance with Chapter 1003.26, which obligates the State to Enforce of School Attendance. Research has identified that reaching youth early to encourage and stress the importance of educational literacy reduces the likelihood that they will enter the juvenile and/or criminal justice system. This initiative engages localized community based stakeholders who have a vested interest in realizing a reduction in juvenile delinquency/acts of violent crime. Finally, this initiative is in direct response to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justices Blueprint Commission recommendation # 30. |

Project Description: |
The ICSDTSPI initiative will provide immediate truancy and/or suspension intervention remediation utilizing localize faith and community based organizations within the affected communities experiencing high rates of dropout, truancy and suspension combined with high rates of juvenile referrals which is a direct correlation to truancy and suspend inner city youth. Community stakeholders will serve as authorized back ground screened behavioral specialist, working directly with the targeted schools. This initiative will also cultivate a relationship with the business community in an effort to create substantive relationships with area businesses to provide economic opportunities for youth who will not otherwise continue their education beyond high school. Up to 300 youth will receive services through this initiative. |
