Place of Hope Seven Stars Emergency Shelter Expansion

Requester: Charles L. Bender III, Founding Executive Director Organization: Place of Hope, Inc.

Project Title: Place of Hope Seven Stars Emergency Shelter Expansion Date Submitted 1/3/2008 3:10:57 PM

Sponsors: Atwater

Statewide Interest:
The unique project addresses the interest of providing a safe temporary refuge for abused and neglected children throughout Palm Beach County and all other counties within the State of Florida. The Place of Hope Seven Stars Emergency Shelter is currently Palm Beach County's only faith-based family-style emergency shelter for boys entering the DCF child welfare system (ages 6-13). The current shelter was initiated/established in 2006 by Place of Hope (one of PBC's largest and highly regarded state-licensed child welfare organizations) in response to local community needs and at the request of the local Community Based Care (CBC) organization. This project addresses increasing and long term needs by moving to an alternative location and expanding our outreach and bed capacity for children from all counties in Florida.

Project Description:
Place of Hope will relocate our current emergency shelter to a new location and expand our ability to reach and serve more abused and neglected children (on a state-wide basis). Place of Hope has purchased the current structure and land using private dollars/financing. Place of Hope will renovate and expand the facilities as well. The total cost of the emergency shelter project is estimated at $1,500,000. Place of Hope, Inc. and our supporters have raised privately $750,000 toward the project. Last year, through this process, the State of Florida approved a grant in the amount of $50,000 toward this project. The grant was matched by the Place of Hope Challenge Fund (privately raised dollars) on a dollar-for-dollar basis. We are again requesting state assistance through this request for this project in a dollar-for-dollar matching amount of $700,000. This new emergency shelter will increase our daily capacity from eight beds to fourteen beds. It is estimated that the new shelter will provide safe temporary refuge for as many as 100 abused children per year. All needed counseling, case management, therapy, education programming, tutoring, recreational and independent living skills development trainings are provided to all clients/children. The shelter provides immediate housing and comprehensive care for children upon removal from their homes by DCF protective investigators. The shelter is currently licensed by DCF and contracted through Children and Family Connections (local CBC).
