Project Description:
The School Aged Youth After School Program is designed to enhance the operation of the school district's school-aged child care program for at-risk children who attend schools in the high crime, low income area of Hillsborough County's University Area, formerly known as "Suitcase City." The program will seek to reduce the number of unsupervised children during non-school hours by providing a supervised and safe educational and recreational environment for children after school during the school year and weekdays (all day) during the summer months. The primary focus shall be directed to providing those services that enhance the school district's primary goal of providing a safe atmosphere for the youth and of improving their academic performance. Services will be provided to youth in the targeted zip codes of 33612, 33613 and other zip codes where children reside who are fed into Muller Elementary School. Enhancement services will include: (1) life skills training designed to change the children's antisocial norms, where they exist; (2) one-on-one tutoring services, as needed, in partnership with the University of South Florida College of Education, that will enhance students' academic performance and school commitment by emphasizing attendance; and, (3) recreational, artistic and cultural opportunities designed to encourage imagination and creativity though intra-agency affiliation with the Prodigy Cultural Arts Program and Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation programs.
