Project Description:
This request is for the continuation of the C-139 Basin Initiative (Fiscal Year 2004-2006 Project Tracking #417) for reducing phosphorus discharges to the Everglades through implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs). Requested funds for Fiscal Year 2007-2008 will support the C-139 and Feeder Canal Basins BMP Demonstration Project Grant for Optimization of BMPs for Phosphorus and evaluation of their effectiveness. Since the mandatory source control program was initiated in 2002, C-139 basin landowners have been mandated to increase the number of BMPs implemented in their farms, however, phosphorus discharge levels from the C-139 Basin have not achieved compliance with Everglades Forever Act requirements. Phosphorus concentrations and loads from the Feeder Canal have increased in recent years. The project will optimize how BMPs are implemented in these areas. There is no other entity covering this need.
