Project Description:
This funding will continue the operation of current Teen Empowerment Program offerings within the University Area. The overall purpose of the Teen Empowerment Program is to empower youth through specific programming concentrated on job training, employability skills training, and cultural, recreational, and educational activities that will foster social and economic empowerment that will follow them through life. The Teen Empowerment Program will involve hands on decision making skills development as they engage in shaping the direction of the program. The Teen Council is a team of teen leaders that is unified in helping address many of the issues facing the University Area and its teen residents. The University Area residents and services in the University Area of Hillsborough County receive high public scrutiny as a result of being the most densely populated area in Hillsborough County with over 40,000 residents-14,000 of which are children-in four square miles and unfortunately touting the highest crime statistics in the county. Teen Programming will engage 150-200 youth, ages 13-18 with programming concentrated on job training and employability skills development, cultural and recreational activities, educational enhancement, educational preparation, Internet savvy and leadership skills development.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
In addition to the following anticipated outcomes, the Teen Empowerment Program will provide documentation of model program for teen involvement in community development and leadership. Measurable outcomes include: (a.) 100% of the participants will continue to be empowered by activities offered by the program (b) 60% of the participants will utilize the technology component to the extent that (1) they enjoy increased computer skills development, (2) they gain the ability to take advantage of online job search and completion of applications for job, college entry, financial aid, etc. (c) 95% of the participants engaged in technology training/usage will develop skills that will enhance their technological skills for life (d) A minimum of 25 students will complete Teen Leadership Training Institute (e) 25% of new participants in the teen program will be drawn from area public schools (junior and senior high schools students into which University Area youth are fed)
