Project Description:
The purpose of this project is to provide a replicable project designed to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics and to provide them with critical thinking and interpersonal skills that will improve the quality of their lives for years to come. The University Area Community Development Corporation, Inc. will collaborate with Junior Achievement of West Central Florida, utilizing its Enterprise Village model as a spring board for not only developing life long skills in enterprise, business and economics but to redirect the approach to success, or lack thereof, of young people in targeted economically and socially challenged communities of Hillsborough and Brevard counties. This project will also provide behavior modification, intervention and diversion for at risk youth in the targeted communities through developing in them the principles and practices salient in business, commerce and entrepreneurship. Essentially this project will give young people the tools they will need to achieve the American dream. The Youth Enterprise Experience will INVEST in the present and future lives of young people; INVLOVE them in real life experiences in the Junior Achievement Enterprise Village; and, INSPIRE them to dream and believe in achieving their goals. For the community, the investment in these young people will be an investment in the future of our communities and of our state. Services that will be provided as part of the Youth Enterprise Experience include: Skills development in financial literacy (family and business budgeting), time management, marketing, business plan development, business management, sales, and customer service. Additionally, business etiquette, economic literacy, and THE EXPERIENCE itself in a safe environment where youth can learn through making mistakes as well as by succeeding. Paramount to all of the above is that participation in this project will provide wholesome, guided, opportunities in a safe environment for the youth that are designed to dissuade involvement in non-productive activities which negatively impact youths ability to become productive members of their communities, i.e. crime , drugs, poor academic performance and poor school attendance potentially leading to dropping out, low self esteem, inability to get and maintain employment earning livable wages, etc.
