SR 19/Little Lake Harris Bridge PD&E

Requester: T. J. Fish, AICP, Executive Director Organization: Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)

Project Title: SR 19/Little Lake Harris Bridge PD&E Date Submitted 12/20/2007 3:52:21 PM

Sponsors: Baker

Statewide Interest:
The Project Development & Environment (PD&E) Study for SR19, from CR561 to CR48, including the Little Lake Harris Bridge, will address needs for enhanced regional mobility & improved public safety, both statewide interests. The Lake-Sumter MPO has determined a need for six lanes on SR19, between Tavares & Howey-in-the-Hills, by Year 2025, reference the MPO's 2025 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The MPO's 2025 Cost Feasible Plan, which is financially constrained, includes four-laning of the SR19 corridor. Regional travel demand from Leesburg, Wildwood, I-75 & points west (on CR48) have compounded the need for enhanced capacity in this corridor. The PD&E Study will look at the potential for widening the current two-lane section. In addition, the Little Lake Harris Bridge is one of the oldest & longest automobile bridges in Lake County. In the interest of public safety, as well as mobility, the time has come to start considering options for widening, replacing, or realigning the bridge.

Project Description:
Completion of a Project Development & Environment (PD&E) Study for the SR19 corridor, from CR 561 (Tavares) to CR48 (Howey-in-the-Hills), including the Little Lake Harris Bridge. The PD&E Study would determine the best means to widen the SR19 corridor, & to widen, replace, and/or realign the Little Lake Harris Bridge. SR19 serves as a regionally significant north-south corridor, connecting the Ocala National Forest (North Lake County) with the Green Swamp (South Lake County). SR19 connects with several other regionally significant corridors, including SR40, CR42, CR44, US441, CR561, CR48, CR455, US27, & SR50. The Lake-Sumter MPO 2025 Long Range Transportation Plan shows a need for six lanes in the portion of SR19, from CR561 to CR48. The Little Lake Harris Bridge, one of Lake County's oldest and longest automobile bridges, is beginning to show signs of wear. It is time to study the potential enhancement of this corridor.
