Project Description:
In collaboration with the local community, Terrace Community Middle School, a public charter school of choice, of the School District of Hillsborough County, governed by the Back To Basics Charter School Foundation, Inc. (a not-for-profit Florida Corporation located in Tampa, Florida) is proposing to create a joint use facility/community center to be incorporated into the new public school facility which opened its doors to students and staff in August 2007. This new educational complex is located at 9180 East Fowler Avenue, on the northeast corner of Fowler and Jefferson Avenues, just immediately east of the I-75 and Fowler Avenue exit ramp. The new school facility is being built in an up and coming growth area of north east Hillsborough County to continue to provide educational services as a public charter school of choice to over 500 families who come from throughout the Tampa Bay area. The school is proposing to create, as a part of its long range educational program a multipurpose facility that will be used by the school and community to provide desperately needed student and adult classroom space, gathering and performance areas, as well as a technology center and gymnasium that will be open 24/7 for use by the neighboring community. Currently there is no such complex within that geographical area. This area is slated to become a high growth and expansion area for the county. The schools administration and governing board, who are sponsored by the School District of Hillsborough County, are pledging to create a facility within a school that will house youths and adults which will focus on weekend, after school and summer educational, recreational, social and experiential programs and activities. The schools property currently borders on a park and river reserve. The public charter school and the proposed school-community center will have access to the adjoining nature park, trails and river. This will allow for sports and other outdoor activities that will be sponsored by the school and local community agencies through the proposed Fowler and Jefferson Community Center. Finally, the new school facility will open its high tech media/library center, fine arts performance areas and gymnasium for public access and utilization for appropriate educational and family/community centered social activities.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Dramatically increase the current non existence of space for the purpose of community sponsored activities, allow for many families in this up and coming area of the county to have year round use of a sports and fine arts area on a pre-arranged and as needed basis and to encourage entities such as the YMCA, and other agencies to provide needed services in that area which would also target currently underserved families. Creation of both the school and in-house community center will increase the desirability of the area for both business and housing ventures thus increase economic development and future growth potential.
