Statewide Interest: |
This project will determine the feasibility of using processed glass cullet for beach fill at erosional hot-spots. If feasible, the material will supplement other sand sources to reduce the chronic erosion of Browards beaches. With easily accessible offshore sand becoming scarce, alternative sand sources will be needed. In addition, using processed glass for beach fill would provide an opportunity for recycling of waste glass, for which the County pays for disposal. |

Project Description: |
This experimental project is part of the Broward County Shore Protection Project, and is exploring the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of using processed glass cullet for supplemental beach fill on the beaches of the Shore Protection Project. Testing of the experimental material includes a geotechnical evaluation, several public perception surveys, a contamination assessment, investigations of several parameters related to sea turtle nesting compatibility on a test plot on Hollywood beach, and a test application on the foreshore, also on Hollywoods beach. The geotechnical evaluations, the public perception surveys, the contamination assessments, and the test plot phase have been completed. A JCP application has been submitted for the deployment of 2000 cubic yards of the processed glass cullet onto about 300 feet of foreshore at north Hollywood beach and for subsequent monitoring of the fate of the material. Construction of the test project is scheduled for the fall of 2008. |
