Project Description:
Mental Health Care (MHC)Inc.'s Central Intake Unit is the access point for adults who require inpatient mental health care services in Hillsborough County. In 2007, 5200 adults received services through Central Intake. This unit provides 24-hour-seven (7) days per week mental health emergency services for individuals in need of crisis stabilization and/or emergency evaluation for psychiatric hospitalization. MHCs Central Intake Unit is the county's Baker Act receiving facility; therefore is charged with the responsibility for triaging and coordinating all publicly funded inpatient mental health services. The 24-hour services include: immediate intervention; assessment; screening; disposition; referral; and, follow-up services. Since 1990, when Central Intake began providing services in Hillsborough County, two facts have increased both the need and demand for the Central Intake Unit; 1) the county's population has increased 30%; and 2) the area hospitals have downsized inpatient mental health care services. Funding for this project will enable MHC to meet the increased demand for services in a therapeutic, stabilizing environment for Hillsborough citizens who are in crisis. Currently, MHC's waiting/observation hold area is inadequate for the number of people served. Overcrowding has been shown to exacerbate the symptoms of mental illnes. The proposed facility expansion will provide a more adequate and manageable area for the triage and disposition into appropriate level of care for persons with mental illness.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
1) The expansion of the Central intake facility will reduce the demand on Hilssborough Co. emergency departments in local hospitals for individuals who meet criteria for inpatient admission but are waiting for an acute care bed. 2) Local law enforcmeent agencies will benefit by having a central drop off point accomodating a larger number of individuals, thereby reducing law enforcment wait times when managing mental health care enabling law enforcement more time in the community to better serve and protect the public. 3) Provide a more comfortable and manageable facility for the numerous individuals being assessed and waiting for a disposition into the appropriate level of care.
