The Fl. Keys is an Area of Critical State Concern and an ecosystem of statewide and national significance, including mainland America's only living barrier coral reef and the largest documented semi-continuous sea grass bed on earth. It contains the nation's most visited national marine sanctuary and its boundaries encompass John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Florida's most visited state park. All levels of government, businesses and community organizations are working to improve water quality in the Florida Keys, which has a favorable effect on our environment and economy.

Project Description:
Construction of wastewater treatment systems compliant with 2010 standards will continue into DEP FY08-09 for projects identified in the 11/07 Keys Wastewater Plan; funding to provide AWT to Ocean Reef, Key Largo, Long Key, Duck Key, North and Middle Lower Keys, and Lower Sugarloaf areas is still needed. A review of funding to begin construction of Duck Key collection system and WWTP upgrade is scheduled for 1/08. It is likely that the 08-09 appropriation will be used toward construction of Key Largo and Middle Lower Keys Wastewater Treatment Facilities.

Describe, specifically, how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings:
Duck Key, Cudjoe, Summerland, Lower Sugarloaf, and Big Pine Key areas are predominatedly serviced by onsite-septic tanks, some unknown systems and secondary plants. Approximately 57,540 lbs of nitogen and 14,191 lbs of phosphorus are presently discharged in these areas. Approximately 8,876 lbs of nitrogen and 2, 805 lbs of phosphorus are anticipated to be discharged following installation of wastewater treatment systems described.
