Statewide Interest: |
The City of Polk City is completely surrounded by the Green Swamp Area of Critical State Concern. The City currently has inadequate wastewater treatment with the majority of the city on older failing septic systems. Rapid growth in the area necessitates a central system to protect the Green Swamp. Currently, the city utilizes Polk County's Mount Olive Wastewater Treatment Facility; however, the sytem is at full capacity and expansion is not an option. In addition, Polk City is in discussions with the County to take over the system and close the aging plant and transfer the capacity to the new facility. |

Project Description: |
The treatment facility will be engineered and constructed to meet 15 year planning period needs. The technology that will be used is unique in Florida in that the treatment will be of drinking water standards. The facility construction will also be unique that the facility will appear to be rural farm buildings. The effluent will be released into a former sand mine which will become a man made wetlands area and corresponding lake to be utilized for public access and recreation purposes. Sanitary sewer services will be expanded to cover the approximately 3,100 new development connections and the existing 3,000 residential connections as well. |
