The STAR Center focuses on the homeless populations of Volusia and Flagler Counties, however services are not limited to those geographical perimeters. Partnering with other local agencies, this project focuses on providing to homeless families and individuals the resources and tools needed to help end the continuing cycle of homelessness

Project Description:
The STAR Center is a collaborative venture involving a number of partnering agencies striving to meet the needs of the homeless population in this community. Current services that are provided on-site include a 24-hour 94 bed shelter that provides temporary housing (up to six months) for homeless families with children and medically needy individuals who are released from the hospital to homelessness; case management; a seven day per week hot meal program coordinated with Halifax Urban Ministries and staffed by over 400 faith-based volunteers; and a Wellness Clinic that attends to the basic health care needs of the clients and utilizes nursing students from the University of Central Florida, a full-time nurse paid by Halifax Hospital and a rotation of Halifax physicians who volunteer two Thursdays out of the month. Other ancillary, but critically important, services provided at The STAR Center include assistance in applying for and obtaining birth certificates and mainstream benefits; the establishment of The STAR Center as a mail distribution location for clients; shower, haircut, and laundry facilities; clothing distribution; assistance in obtaining work boots that are required in order to apply for day labor employment; and the distribution of refurbished bicycles for individuals who lack available transportation for verified employment.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
In one year The STAR Center will provide housing for 200 homeless adults and children; will provide 75,000 hot meals; 5000 showers and basic healthcare to 2100 homeless individuals. In one year 2500 unduplicated homeless individuals will be served by The STAR Center.
