Project Description:
This program will offer 1) state-subsidized tuition assistance to existing teachers who are �out of content area� in order to receive accelerated certification in the sciences and/or math and 2) tuition assistance to students seeking dual degrees (Education + STEM majors) or Education minors to STEM majors, in order to encourage them to go into teaching, especially in high-need Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties School Districts.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
a. Within 24 months of initiating the program, Barry will graduate at least 20 students with STEM majors who are certified to teach in Florida, of those at least 50% will teach in Florida, and of those, at least 20% will be placed in high-need Districts b. Of those full-time students participating in the program, 45% will graduate within 5 years of enrolling at Barry University c. Of those electing to receive the $2,000 forgivable loan option, 60% will meet the requirements of forgiveness and remain in a high-need District for at least three years d. 90% of participants will receive on-site mentoring at least three times after being placed in a school (mentors will receive travel stipends based on Barry University per diem rates and standardized mileage reimbursement, up to $5,000 annually) Long-term outcomes: Cost-effectiveness (tuition assistance versus cost of retaining when teachers are not retained); improved student achievement in math and science, as evidenced by test scores, when students receive instruction from teachers with subject matter expertise vs. those without
