Statewide Interest: |
Park development restores historic wetland conditions to the site and provides for water quality improvement and flood abatement for surrounding neighborhoods. Offsite stormwater treatment is being performed on the property, resulting in clean water discharge into Allen's Creek which is a state designated SWIM (Surface Water Improvement & Management program) water body. Eventual stormwater discharge from this site is into the Tampa Bay Estuary, which is part of the National Estuary Program. The site also contains recently acquired structures which are recommended for inclusion in the National Historic Register by a consultant. Archeological study on the site revealed several artifacts which are now on file at the Division of Historic Resources, Florida Department of State. This project provides for development of passive recreational uses for the over 17 million annual visitors to Pinellas County Parks. This park, as with all county parks, will serve not only local but statewide and also national and international visitors, resulting in positive statewide economic impact. |

Project Description: |
The project is the development of Eagle Lake Park in central Pinellas County, including recreational, educational, historic and environmental components. The park will include bike trails, nature trails, hiking trails, picnic shelters, restrooms, paw playground (dog park), observation platforms, fishing, boardwalk and support infrastructure. Educational and historic activities will include a Citrus Farmstead that will interpret the history and significance of citrus farming in Pinellas County. This park development has been a highly anticipated addition to the park system. The general public has been very active in development planning. Local Audubon Society members partner to monitor bird species inventories. The site is currently undergoing initial development activities, which include significant environmental habitat restoration. Other major environmental components include the planned restoration of wetlands to historical conditions and water quality improvements to offsite stormwater discharge that will be filtered through wetlands on the park property prior to eventual discharge into Tampa Bay. SWIM grant funding from the Southwest Florida Water Management District is helping to pay for the offsite stormwater treatment. Requesting funding for passive park development that incorporates the stormwater treatment features into recreational activities. |
