CBIRS Request 2250

Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #2250
21st Century Workforce Development Training in the Sciences

Requester: Charles M. Hamilton, Pres/CEO Organization: South Florida Science Museum

Project Title: 21st Century Workforce Development Training in the Sciences Date Submitted 1/4/2008 12:12:23 PM

Sponsors: Atwater

Statewide Interest:
This project addresses the urgent demand for workforce development training in the sciences to better prepare K-12 students for careers in the rapidly growing biomedical and technology sectors. A great investment in tax dollars is being made to bring new scientific companies to the region but there is a glaring lack of similar investment in K-12 job training in the sciences to enable these new jobs to be filled by Florida residents.

Project Description:
This program links training in the sciences to future career roles for the purpose of encouraging middle and high schoolers to pursue pre-career studies in science and math. An exhibit on careers in science will be designed, constructed, and installed in a series of four in-museum seminars and four in-school seminars offered throughout the year and presented by scientists who are currently employed in the region. In addition, these seminars will be taped and shown by Channel 19. The program will focus on underserved populations through a partnership with the Urban League.
