Statewide Interest: |
Developmental delays in young children are identified through child screenings and assessments, but go uncorrected as children enter child care and early education programs. This pilot program will provide the appropriate level of care young children with developmental delays may require to ensure they enter the K-12 system prepared to learn. |

Project Description: |
Children who have been identified as having mild developmental delays and who do not qualify for services through early intervention programs go untreated and may enter the K-12 education system unprepared. This project helps to correct this problem by providing certified teachers to serve as resources with private providers/child care centers to better address developmental problems of children identified through screenings. Without an appropriate intervention, children may continue to fall behind and eventually require more intensive and costly remediations. The Resource Teachers may work with multiple centers and provide a more specialized approach for each individual child as needed. Resource Teachers will help increase child care centers' capacity to screen and serve young children with developmental needs by mentoring classroom teachers and modeling appropriate follow-up and use of individual learning plans (ILP) for each child. |

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
It is anticipated that 85% of early learning programs that participate will make appropriate changes in their planning and programming for each child identified as having developmental delays. These changes will be measured in lesson plans and teacher interviews. It is also anticipated that 75% of all children with developmental delays who receive an individualized learning plan by participating in this program will demonstrate developmental improvements. |
