Statewide Interest: |
The pilot program, Integrated Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for Delinquency Prevention (IMHSAS/DP), addresses significant unmet mental health and substance abuse needs of delinquent and pre-delinquent youth aged 12-17. Research and clinical consensus indicates that treatment for adolescents is most effective when it addresses youths psychosocial problems and mental health needs in addition to their substance abuse problems. This type of programming has been in place for adults with co-morbid psychiatric disorders; however integrated programming for adolescents has seriously lagged behind. |

Project Description: |
To be piloted in the 17th Judicial Circuit (Broward County, Florida), IMHSAS/DP is an adolescent substance abuse outpatient program is a 12-14 week program designed for youth ages 12-17, who are experimenting with and/or using illegal substances and are interested in learning the skills necessary to control their behavior. Therapy sessions include the youth and also any member of their support group, such as family and friends, who can empower and support the youth in remaining drug-free and develop into productive members of the community. IMHSAS/DP is based on ACRA-Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach, which utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational enhancement therapy. In short, the program attempts to help youth understand the thought processes and content behind their behavior and develop more appropriate and healthy living skills. |
