Project Description:
7. Rio Grande Charter School of Excellence will provide elementary education to 160 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through the fifth grades for students who live throughout Orange County. The majority of our students come from apartment complexes concentrated in the Holden Heights community of Orange County whose parents are unemployed, underemployed and/or attending pre-employment training programs. Rio Grande Charter School will provide educational choice to parents and small classes to their children who are in need of more individualized instruction to overcome academic deficiencies. This funding will provide additional resources to assist students who cannot read on grade level and who will need more than the regularly scheduled reading instruction to make sure that they are not left behind year after year. These children need additional tutorial aides such as computers, handheld technology devices to support mathematics, reading and science and instructional support. Ninety-five percent of the students who enroll at Rio Grande Charter School are recipients of "Free and Reduced" lunch as a result of the socio-economic status of their parents who are either unemployed or underemployed.
