Project Description: |
The "Leadership Through Education" model is a community-based program in partnership with local school districts to provide leadership and responsibility based training to idenitifed youth and parents in the community. This proposal is based on the "Leadersip Through Education" curriculum taught by the Coaches of the Tampa Bay Academy of Hope, Inc., to 200 at-risk students and parents who attend middle schools and high schools in Tampa and Hillsborough County each school year. The participating students are between the ages of 12 and 18 and live in households whose annual incomes are at or below poverty level. Prior to their selections, the students perform below average academically and are in danger of dropping out of school. Through its program, the Tampa Bay Academy of Hope, Inc. provides direct and indirect services to the students and their families which include parenting and coping skills, support groups, and academic coaching that encourages the students to stay in school. Individual sessions and group meetings build leadership skills, improved self-worth, independence, responsibility, accountability, and integrity. As a result, the study and learning skills of the students improve. Their grades improve, as well as their school attendance. Behavior at school impoves and their self-esteem and leadership skills develop and grow. A substantial percentage of participating students graduate high school and attend college; some are the first members of their families to do so. The cycle of poverty and crime is reversed by increasing high school graduation rates and providing participating students greater long-term economic opportunity and the confidence and skills to achieve their greatest potential. |
