Project Description:
Todays growing Manatee County elder population needs a Center to be the focal point to access information, employment, health and mental health services, volunteerism, education, arts and other cultural experiences, new friends, nutrition, exercise, intergenerational experiences and many other opportunities. Both Bradenton and Manatee County are designated as Communities for a Lifetime. Nearly 10 percent (9,059 persons) of Manatee County citizens age 60+ have incomes below 125 percent of the federal poverty level. Minorities are overrepresented with 1,732 persons (32 percent of all minorities 60+; 19 percent of all persons 60+ with incomes at 125 percent of poverty or below). Twenty-three percent of persons age 65+ (16,774) are both low-income and medically underserved. These seniors need affordable mental and physical health screenings and dependable, affordable transportation. The Center, in partnership with Manatee County Area Transit, Manatee Memorial Hospital and the Manatee County Health Department, will provide transportation and physical and mental health services. The 16,538 caregivers age 60+ will receive access to respite and information services along with support, counseling and techniques to reduce stress. With a goal of being the community focal point for aging information and a wide array of services, the Center will be a resource to the entire community with emphasis on services to persons aged 60 and older and caregivers. Special outreach, programming and assistance will be developed for persons of moderate and low incomes, persons of minority heritage and persons who are medically underserved. The Center will be an access point for the Aging Resource Center, providing information on aging for all citizens. It will also offer nutritious meals, health screenings, evidence-based chronic disease management, fitness programs, training for and connections to jobs and volunteer opportunities, health and mental health counseling, support groups, art, music, dance and theatre. Numerous programs will have offices on-site. The Center can shelter and feed 1,000 persons (citizens and service workers) in time of disaster, with a generator that will power the Center for 4 continuous days.
