Rehabilitation of injured birds of prey, specifically bald eagles, helps to fulfill the goal of Florida's State Comprehensive Plan, Section 187.201 (9) (b) 1, 3 and 4 regarding the protection of endangered and threatened species, and Section 372.072 and 372.073 regarding endangered, threatened and species of special concern.

Gov't Entity:   Private Organization (Profit/Not for Profit): Yes

Project Description:
As the Bald Eagle has been removed from the federal endangered species list, and is schedule to be removed from Florida's list, the need to protect this species is critical as the methods of protection move from regulatory to a non regulated issue. Audubon Center for Birds of Prey will work with state agencies to influence land development strategies, educate the public on the importance of protection of this species in addition to the rehabilitation and release of Bald Eagles in Florida with the purpose of ensuring a stable population in Florida. We admitted 56 Bald Eagles in 2007, so the need is still great.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Audubon Center for Birds of Prey admits between 600-700 birds a year with approximately 50-60 being eagles; approximately 40-41% of total admissions are released back into the wild. Measurable outcomes include: educating the public through education and outreach initiatives; work with the regional planning council and the FWCC to influence land development strategies, track and monitor threats to nests and nestlings and rehabilitate and release Bald Eagles back into the wild. Survivable birds suitable for placement will be transferred to qualified permitted facilities for use in educational exhibits/programs.
