Project Description:
The HRWYF Inc. is a private not for profit agency that works with the Department of Juvenile Justice to reduce juvenile crime and juvenile recidivism through its residential treatment programs. We currently operate five residential programs in Florida. Data reflects that we must continue to look for new ways to work with delinquent youth, in order to prepare them for their return to their local communities. Music therapy has been proven to work with such groups, ie. Boys and Girls Choirs. This project would be a mixture of music, discipline, and academics. Youth would have to earn the right to participate in the music therapy component of their program, by obtaining passing school grades and maintaining positive behaviors. The funding would allow us to have a music therapist at each of our five sites and purchase needed supplies. The goal will be to have the youth perform at local community events and to encourage the building of a strong positive peer group. The success of the program would be measured by following these youth after their release for a period of a year and working with them to enroll in similar type programs once they return home.
