Project Description: |
This project is to continue the Special Olympics Florida Health, Wellness and Empowerment Initiative that provides Health Screenings and Leadership Programs for the athletes of Special Olympics Florida.
The proven Healthy Athletes programs, successfully conducted, have already been significantly expanded through this investment. These programs include vision, dental, hearing, podiatry and fitness screenings. The program relies heavily on volunteer professionals and provides training for professionals and para-professionals in the proper care of, and specialized techniques of care for, people with intellectual disabilities.
The Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) are multifaceted direct services programs designed to teach the individual involved to become self-advocates and to fully participate, with their families, in the community. Included in the training are programs for speech, governance, and program advocacy training.
Complete program descriptions, success testimonials, additional information and budget available upon request.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
: The principal objectives include:
Continue providing health-screening services on a statewide basis, along with care components, to a much-underserved population.
Continue providing training to professionals and para-professionals who often have not been trained to provide services to the intellectually disabled population. Continue providing for long-term continuation of these programs and services through a well-trained group of volunteers.
Continue providing the program participants with the specific skills to become self-advocates, involved in the community and to carry the message of the benefits of participation to other qualified participants. Trained athletes will become recruiters.
