Statewide Interest:
Research underscores the importance of a healthy pregnancy and effective parenting practices during early childhood to prepare a strong foundation for childrens healthy development and readiness for school. A pilot program to distribute New Parent Kits to new and expecting parents in Florida can be supported by a public-private partnership with the long-term goal of ensuring a better and healthier future for Floridas young children. By increasing parents knowledge about the importance of prenatal care, healthcare and safety, and developmental benchmarks of young children, the New Parent Kit project aims to increase parenting skills that will yield positive outcomes for Floridas children.

Project Description:
The New Parents Kit is a model for universal parenting education that can serve new and expecting parents as well as the providers of the more than half-million children born each year in Florida. Distributed to parents and their providers through home visits, prenatal care, parenting classes, child care, WIC, hospitals, and other programs, the Kit will work synergistically with the Whole Child program in pilot counties to ensure the efficacy of its distribution as well as the implementation of a quantitative and qualitative study to gauge the programs effectiveness. Funding will help to develop materials that include: Information addressing prenatal care, child development, and health and safety; Special focus on early brain development, literacy, quality childcare, access to healthcare/KidCare, and smoking prevention/cessation; Up-to-date information on providers in the pilot communities; Basic information, what parents can do to get more information on multiple issues; A public awareness campaign in the pilot counties to increase awareness of and support for the New Parent Kit program and develop future partners to sustain it; The development and implementation of a pre and post evaluation of a sample of parents participating in the program to gauge its effectiveness in increasing parenting knowledge and skills
