Trauma Counseling for Victimized Youth for Lee County

Requester: Dr. Bill Boyer Organization: Childrens Advocacy Center of SW FL, Inc.

Project Title: Trauma Counseling for Victimized Youth for Lee County Date Submitted 12/18/2007 5:51:19 PM

Sponsors: Aronberg

Statewide Interest:
Over the last ten years many studies have documented high rates of trauma exposure among juvenile offenders, with many youth experiencing numerous traumatic events. These events include: experiencing childhood physical and or sexual/abuse, experiencing serious life threats and/or injuries, witnessing severe injury (especially in cases of domestic violence) and/or death of another; and being involved in gang violence. Unresolved traumatic experiences may precipitate emotional and mental disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and in some youth may become externalized as delinquent behaviors. One does not just get over emotional impairment due to trauma. The effects may persist and result in an adult dysfunctional lifestyle, if left untreated. Evidence-based treatments have been identified to address trauma issues. Recidivism rates among youth who receive research-based treatment programs are from 25 to 80 percent lower than youth in untreated control groups. While trauma interventions have recently been introduced in some residential commitment programs, these strategies have generally not been implemented in all programs or with the juvenile justice population at the community level. This program serves to reduce the number of reoccurring criminal acts committed by youth who have been victims of trauma and to reduce the number of these youth sent to residential commitment programs. This pilot is of a statewide interest because successful trauma interventions at the community level are significantly more cost effective than treating youth in state funded residential commitment facilities and/or the long term criminal justice and social costs of not intervening.
