Project Description: |
The Tabernacle Community Empowerment Foundation (TCEF) was created to empower families economically and educate them on opportunities that will increase their quality of life. Currently District 2 is considered to have the highest amount of the low income families in all of Leon County as well, it is recognized by the Department of Juvenile Justice as being among the top 5 zip code areas which have the highest juvenile crime rate in Leon County. Reportedly, there were 656 juvenile delinquent charges among youth in the 32310 zip code area during the 2001-2002 period. This zip code area had the largest amount of charges and referrals during this period. Additionally, the failure and high school drop-out rate is high in the south side area as well. Reported by Leon County School Board, the Out-Of-School Supensions were in this District totaled to approximately 401 students. Of the 401 suspensions, a total of 367 were African Americans. Activities offered by TCEF will enable both youth and parents to empower themselves and become productive citizens in our community. By offering various services to the community, this may assist with decreasing the juvenile crime rate and as well, boost the income levels in the District. TCEF is planning to offer the following services: Academic Tutoring, Family and Peer Mentoring, Employment Opportunities, Neighborhood Accountability Board, Vocational Education Training, Home Economics Training, GED Program, Youth Recreation and Training area(Gym), Swimming Lessons, Health Services, Outreach and Senior Care Services. Currently, TCEF offers academic tutoring for twenty-five youth as well as and limited outreach services for families in the community. TCEF is requesting funds for operating costs that will allow for full-time and part-time staff as well as operating expenses to provide fulltime services to the community. This request will allow the community to receive a cadre of services to improve their quality of life. Services offered consist of Vocational Education Courses, GED Courses, Outreach Services, Housing Assistance Services, Referral Services, Caregiver and Senior Services, Fine Arts Courses and more. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Private citizens and families will be provided various opportunities that enhance their economic/income base. TCEF programs will allow families to decrease their dependency on welfare and other economic assistance programs. The community as a whole will benefit in that the income level will increase and the level of juvenile crime will decrease. Based on the failure rate and out-of school-suspension statistics reported by the Leon County School Board, there definitely displays a need for such a facility in the area. Tabernacle Church and TCEF both track and document the services provided to families in the community. During the period 2003-2204, Tabernacle Church Outreach Ministry has funded over 500 families. Services consisted of food and clothing donations, gift cards/certificates from Winn Dixie and etc. TCEF also provides tutoring to a small group of youth where the enrollment capacity is 25 due to the limited space. During the 2003-2004 Academic School Year, Tabernacle offered tutoring to approximately 35 youth at different sites in the community. Documentation of services is kept on file and may be provided upon request. |
